Muscles deteriorate with age and in many disorders, and this loss of function can cause a variety of additional health issues. People may become frail and endure an overall deterioration in health when their skeletal muscles deteriorate. Now, researchers have discovered that the health of muscles is significantly influenced by an enzyme called PCYT2. This enzyme is an essential component of a process that produces lipids, and if it is lacking, muscle degeneration may result. The results were published in Nature Metabolism.Giant Plasma Membrane Vesicles generated from Muscle Membranes (GPMVs). These isolated large membrane units, coupled with advanced microscopy applications, enabled a close analysis of the architecture of the otherwise difficult-to-study cell membrane lipid bilayer.
