We frequently assume that earthquakes only happen on dry land, but undersea earthquakes have the ability to do far more harm by sending out tsunamis that come ashore and literally send forth waves of devastation in their wake. Since underwater earthquakes can have a variety of properties, it has proven challenging to try and predict tsunamis. But what if we could anticipate tsunamis that cause the least amount of damage and casualties? In this study, four prior earthquake-tsunami scenarios are examined. The red and yellow rectangles show the predicted earthquake dimensions, locations, and orientations retrieved by the proposed inverse model for sound radiation used in the study.
