According to a recent study published in Earth Science Reviews, the shine and excellent preservation of fossils found in Germany’s Posidonia Shale are not caused by pyrite (also known as fool’s gold), as has long been believed, but rather by a variety of minerals that may reveal the environment in which the fossils formed. This discovery has the potential to advance our knowledge of how fossils originate and develop, particularly as it relates to Early Jurassic fossils, which are among the best-preserved fossils in the world.Photo of an ammonite fossil found in the Posidonia shale lagerstatte’s Ohmden quarry.
