The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) and the Idaho National Laboratory (INL) have recently joined forces with the electric company Idaho Power to look into the advantages and viability of manufacturing hydrogen at existing hydropower plants. This partnership has the potential to lower carbon emissions across Idaho and stabilize energy storage grids.“INL and PNNL will evaluate the coupling of electrolytic hydrogen production technologies with hydropower plants to identify scenarios that could help Idaho Power achieve its goal of providing 100% clean energy by 2045,” said Brett Dumas, who is the director of environmental affairs at Idaho Power. The 17 hydroelectric power units operated by Idaho Power will be utilized in this partnership.
