In a green paper recently presented at the Space Tourism Conference 2023, it is emphasized that there are both commercial and biological dangers associated with human conception in space, and that there needs to be an open discourse to help manage these risks as space tourism grows in the ensuing years. The researchers emphasize that this is due in part to the fact that space tourists would behave very differently from traditional astronauts, who are trained professionals who normally carry out scientific missions while in orbit.“Our starting point was a throwaway comment about sex in space, but when we checked, we were surprised the sector has not openly considered the risks and this led to the study,” said Dr. David Cullen, who is a Professor of Astrobiology & Space Biotechnology.
