To the ladies and gentlemen of the class of ’99 (and everyone else who listened to the radio in the late ’90s), Baz Luhrmann preached the virtues of sunscreen. Mr. Luhrmann assured us that “scientists have proven the long-term benefits of sunscreen,” and he was mostly right. While research has demonstrated that using sunscreen lowers the incidence of both nonmelanoma and melanoma skin cancers, some experts are skeptical of the validity of the data supporting this assertion. Even the National Cancer Institute (NCI) admits it is “not known” whether sunscreen lowers the chance of developing skin cancer because “not enough studies have been done to prove this.” But, this does not mean sunscreen is not beneficial.
