Currently docked at the International Space Station (ISS), the Axiom-2 mission is scheduled to land on Earth on May 31. In addition to being the second private mission to the ISS, Axiom-2 is also participating in a number of scientific studies. One of these studies, conducted in nanobioreactors by the UC San Diego Sanford Stem Cell Institute, will examine how the microgravity environment affects human stem cells’ susceptibility to inflammation, cancer, and aging.Cell samples that have returned from space are being evaluated by scientists at the Sanford Stem Cell Institute of UC San Diego. Since the dawn of the space age, scientists have learned that microgravity causes a myriad of both short-and long-term health issues ranging from bodily fluid relocation to slower heart.
