The use of artificial intelligence (AI) is being investigated to better understand how human genetic abnormalities result in a number of diseases, according to a new study that was published in Nature. To further the understanding of how genes interact with one another, the Geneformer machine learning model was created for the project. “Geneformer has vast applications across many areas of biology, including discovering possible drug targets for disease,” said Dr. Christina Theodoris, MD, who is an assistant professor in the Department of Pediatrics at UC San Francisco, and lead author of the study. This strategy will significantly improve our capacity to develop network-correcting treatments for diseases where advancement has been constrained by a lack of data.
