In a recently published study, researchers from Rice University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) employed artificial intelligence (AI) to investigate how reflections in a variety of objects may be made into “cameras.” This work has the potential to enhance the ability to see items that are hidden or behind corners, which is especially advantageous for autonomous vehicles (i.e., self-driving cars).ORCa, a computer vision technique created by MIT and Rice University researchers, turns reflections in shiny objects into “cameras,” enabling users to view the world as if they were looking through the “lenses” of commonplace objects like a ceramic coffee mug or a metallic paper weight.
