The Earth’s mountains, which range in size from tiny buildings to large cities, are some of the most amazing natural phenomena on our tiny, blue world. These plate tectonic processes, also known as convergent borders, frequently result in the formation of these geological wonders. One form is a continental collision, in which two plates collide, or a subduction zone, in which one plate slides beneath another plate.Despite the fact that these processes originate from deep beneath the Earth, a recent study published in Nature Geoscience explores how a closer look at one of these mountain ranges calls into question earlier theories about how mountains are formed. “Mountain building is a fundamental process of how Earth behaves,” said Dr. Sean Gallen, an assistant professor of geosciences at Colorado State University.
