In order to reduce the large amounts of carbon dioxide and prevent it from accumulating in the Earth’s atmosphere, a new carbon capture method known as enhanced weathering (EW) that involves applying ground-up silicate rock to Midwestern farm fields has been studied recently. This work quantified this unique approach successfully and has the potential to advance farming practises that currently rely heavily on row-crop agriculture, which contributes significantly to atmospheric carbon dioxide emissions.Dr. Evan DeLucia, Director Emeritus at the Institute for Sustainability, Energy, and Environment (iSEE) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a co-author on the study, said: “We urgently need effective ways to draw down atmospheric carbon dioxide in addition to reducing emissions.”
