The researchers at KAUST who developed the prototype sensor claim that it could someday provide a quick, painless, and easy way for patients to monitor their diabetes. When the body is unable to control its blood glucose levels, diabetes develops. Maintaining a healthy blood glucose level is crucial for diabetics since high blood sugar can cause illnesses like cardiovascular disease and other serious health problems.Diabetes patients have historically checked their blood glucose levels with instruments that analyse a drop of blood from a finger prick many times each day. In recent years, implanted sensors have made it possible to continuously monitor blood sugar levels without having to endure uncomfortable pinpricks, however these devices may not be as accurate at lower glucose levels and are not approved.
