A recent study disproves the conventional wisdom that prohibiting fishing in significant portions of the ocean will harm the fishing business.Researchers from the National Geographic Society, the Mexican Center for Marine Biodiversity, the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego, the Institute of Americas, and the Gulf of California Marine Program compared the performance of Mexico’s industrial fishing industry in the years before and after the country’s establishment of a sizable marine protected area.The whole footprint of the 147,000 square kilometer Revillagigedo National Park, which was formed in 2017, is shielded from fishing and other extractive activities. Prior to its establishment, the local fishing sector vocally opposed the National Park.
